The Muddy Buggy Ride

-Today was shrouded in work, culture, mystery of man and a Blast of Birthday delight at the close.
-The team was up as usual early this morning to have breakfast together and today our goal was to finish all our tasks we started.
-Rick and Don with the team of masons finished pouring the lentals at the church. I (Fonda) went down to the church site and got some cement mud to fill in a concrete wall where the electricians had to open to find wire.Robert and Mike finished the gate they had started on the back wall of the yard.Fonda and Carole then made a quick lunch so we could be on our way up the road to meet an Old Order mennonite who was going to meet us and take us to a Old Order Colony called Springfield. We got to the edge of the road and sure enough there were 2 wagons hitched with horses ready to take us to a different land and a differnet culture. We rode in the wagons back a lane approx. 4-5 miles through the most mud and muck of my entire life!We saw the homes and barns and buildings as if back in time a 100 yrs. ago. No electricity, water power and wind mill power. These families settled here in Belize as an Old order colony, they have big families, I talked with one lady who had 3 children and her 4th was on the way, she stated she came from a family of 16 kids and her husband came from a family of 15. They have hugh families,go bare footed and are not as cleanly a type as i am used Old Order mennonites. The mud was simply incredible. It was a very interesting venture. Later this evening we went to an ocean front area of Belize there were a few condos that were really beautiful and right on the water.Tonight after our evening meal we celebrated one of the girls birthdays we had cake, punch, and carmeled corn, I did some face painting on the kids we had devotions and played fruit basket turn over. There was alot of laughter and a fun filled evening. We are really packed up mostly now and ready to head for the air-port in the morning! We have a great filling of accomplishment and satisfaction for all the things the Lord has allowed us to do this week. Its not all about our work we have done, but alot about the relationships we had begun with a family of 10 girls and 3 little boys who don't have parents to steer and guide them through life's difficult road.WE have learned to love these kids. A Day of Blast

-Today was a day of multitudinal events-the group was up early as usual and started into our new workday full of vigor.
-Some of us went to the river to pick up rocks as usual(we have picked up so many rocks I feel rocked) these today we are using to do some repair work in the driveway here at Hosanna house! Not far into our day a little lady appeared that wanted to sell us baskets-we bought quite a few from her! It was now raining and she was about to return home as we were about to go on another rock picking episode.I(Fonda)was driving so we took her most of her trip home about 18 miles to her place. As I was talking to her she told me she had 13 children and they were all dead. Some of her grandchildren lived with her and in fact 1 of her grandaughers had accompantied her on his trip! Her name is Patricia and she was 63 years old. She looked at my watch and stated whe would like to have a watch the next time I came to Belize. She spoke Mayan and English! Experiences like this don't just happen they are very unique! She looked old, and battered but her heart was precious and she hugged me so close when we stopped to let her out!She told me she was making baskets and selling them so she could buy her grandaughter some books to read.
Our 3 new little arrivals were all doing well except the girl. She continues to mostly cry today, and make inappropriate noises. She fianally took her arm down and you could see where she had been hit up beside her face. The little boy who is 2Yo had a big gash under his chin, which last night after he had arrived they placed a bandaide on it. Tonight I actually closed the wound it appeared approx. 48 h old. they said the mother had caused this hugh gash. Tonight the little girl actually talked a little to me but she continued to lay in her bed seemingly to be very afraid of the other children and of the staff.I think she will come around.
-Mike and Robert worked on finishing plumbing jobs and putting together a gate that was needed for the back of the property wall around the back yard.Things are really coming together and it's really neat to see the growth of a project from one small team, in addition to many teams who have come before us and the many who will follow.
-Rick and Don mostly worked at the church site at the bottom of the hill.
-Carole continues to make and plan wonderful meals for us!We are eating really well.
-Tomorrow we are working half a day and finishing up loose ends I'm excited to witness all the growth!
-God has continued to Bless this ministry at Hosanna House and tonight we felt a really special closeness to the children as we sat around singing with them-you really have to come and experience it firsthand.Signing off for tonight your hostess Fonda Cassidy for the blog

Gettin It Done

-Today the 10 of us are realizing it is already Thursday-so we're thinkin we need to keep a steady pace and work on getting the work done!
-Early morning started out with at good breakfast of eggs over bread/really good if you haven't tried it!
-Then each of us to our chores-Rick, Don,Brian and several hired Belize workers down at the church site sorking block, mixing cement/mud and placing blocks upon blocks!
-At the orphanage Robert,Mike doing electrical and plumbing jobs. They have said they think they will be starting a business called R and M electric and plumbing. They had some dirty jobs.
-Fonda,Greg and Marvin(Belize worker)cut rebar lots of it -into certain lengths so to be used by the church workers to place in their cement.
-Carole so faithfully prepares meals and oversees along with Darlene the menus and meals.
-Today was rain on and off which helped to cool things a little. One little episode of the van getting stuck at the church work site took a little extra shoving to get it out, but out it came!
-Tonight after devotions with the orphanage children, we witnessed 3 new arrivals. 2 boys and 1 girl were brought in late by a social worker. All we know right now is that they were dirty and hungary. It was very sad to witness this occurance. The little girl just kept her arm up over her face as much as she could, laid in her bed and did not want to get up! The boys were more concerned about their hungar and went about like little wolves when they were given food.
-It broke our hearts, but also warmed our hearts to see the children who are here and very happy kids-to see them reach out to the new ones and want to help them! That is part of what its all about here! Extending the love of Christ to these little ones. Because they cannot help it where they are tonight, they are not responsible for the choices their parents made to be irresponsible! They are so easy to love and play with! They wear their emotions on their little faces and have such a great laughter and joy to spread around, I hope we can all be a little more like them, spread more joy-and share Jesus-signing off your hostess Fonda Cassidy for Hosanna House-Belize

-January 24th, 2007
-What a great day for our team-this was our day off so to speak and we did a day of total touring! WE started off early this AM and as we drove we knew it was a good day to tour because it was raining! So if we can't work we can tour!
-We went to the Mayan ruins and they were absolutely breathtaking! The ruins were up in the sky so high and had so many steps to climb etc., it was a great place to be and by now the sun was shining so wonderfully!
-Next we went to a village of old order Mennonites this area includes 100's of sq. miles. We went to a resturant called a Pondarosa for lunch and they had alot of old german food that could be ordered ,or you could just get regular food.Robert and I (Fonda) had fried chicken and french fries! We went to a hugh store of the Mennonites that sold any kind of food item you could want to get either regular, or by bulk. This store also included any kind of material you might need to make something, or sewing machine(tredle). this very large community settled here in 1958 is when this colony started. They drive horse and buggy, use tractors, 4-wheelers and motorcycles and no helments. They have hugh chicken houses, dairy operations etc. We visited farm implements businesses, and welding machine shops etc. It nearly blows your mind that out in the middle of no where there is this colony of old order mennonites sort of like back from our areas in the States.
-Mid-afternoon we visited a dairy store where they sell there own brand of ice-cream,Oh boy was it ever good.the team had various kinds,we had raisin and rum-some had mango, others strawberry, vanilla, raspberry, there were many kinds to choose from. 2 hugh scoops for $2.00/Belize dollars which converts over to $1.00/American dollar!Man what a bargain!
We left and on our way home we stopped at a womans house that was supposed to have baskets for sale! Well no baskets were found because hse had sold them all to the last group. It began to rain while we were there and don't you know it, our van got stuck in the mud! Some had to get our and push it out! We got back on the road and it was still raining, guess this was good for getting the mud off our van! Bob pulled off at a hugh city dump along the way home, drove back in a little way over smoking and burning trash all around us with 100's of vultures lurking around. He blew the van horn and we watched as heads started peeping up far away, then people began walking toward the van.It really broke your heart to know that people lived amoung the trash the way these people did.Kids came to the van.We gave them food and a couple bags of clothes. At first I think they did not realize the bags had clothing in it.We thought hey-- -they are not picking it up.We thought they thought it was just more trash! So one guy got out opened the bags and they saw then it was clothes.I thought I would just start crying to see this pitiful sight! This was an area of approx.several sq.miles of trash and trash heaps, burning and smoldering etc. and to think that children and families lived here.
I know we came home tired, but it was a blessed feeling of tired-we have a place to lay our heads at night, out of the rian and wind.We have clothes to wear and nice homes and nice families.WE are so Blessed.WE had devotions with the kids tonight, played games and now we are winding down for bed! It's hard sometimes to go to sleep when you have seen so many things it's hard to process it all!i know tonight I am very grateful for all the Blessings that God has allowed me to have so far while on this earth! God Bless your night-signing off your hostess Fonda Cassidy for the team.

-Today we were up as usual by 07:00am to share the glory of a new day! Fresh backs, renewed energy! Freash sunshine and rain all together! WE actually had several rainbows today!
-2 of the guys worked hard at getting 7 new lights up on the wall surrounding the wall around the orphanage(Robert and Mike)they pulled about 300 feet of wire to make this happen! Tonight we saw the lights shining for the first time and they were beautiful!-
-Others of us went to the church work site and blended sand, cement, and rocks together various ways and at various times to make cement happen and steps and different formations! This group was Don, Rick, Greg, Fonda and Brian. We tried hard to beat the heat, but I think it beat us instead! I (Fonda)got to drive the big van several times to the river to get rocks. We had lots of good exercise going on to pick rocks (I'm talkin lots of rocks)WE were sweatin!
-later this afternoon all of us but 4 took off to the river to swim about 17 miles away! The river was swift, cool and clear as a bell! Good thing it was clear since Rick accidently dropped our van keys into the river and had to dive approx into 12 feet of water 2-3 times to retrieve our keys. Thanks goodness he got them! On the was back as luck would have it -suddenly our right front tire went flat-we were about 7 miles from Hosanna House! We got the tire changed and got back for supper late, but had a wonderful supper prepared by Carole, we were all a little extra tired I think! WE had devotions at 8:00pm with the kids and played with them a little while, then we were back to our bunk rooms-we have played darts, sat around on our veranda and talked and drank coffee and hot tea! Suddenly I fill wide awake and full of energy, its time to blog-Thanks for keeping up with us--if you have comments we are open--signing off-your hostess Fonda Cassidy from Belize

January 10, 2007

This year's work crew includes Charles Burkett, Kenny Burkett, Tony Burkett, Wendy Burkett, Amy Churchman, Dave Churchman, Nelson Dice, Wayne Kessinger, and Mike Zeger. We represent 2 states and 3 different churches.

Our first day mainly consisted of travel and getting settled in once arriving to our accomodations. Being greeted at the airport by Bob, Darlene and a few of the girls was a truly welcome sight! What a joy to see the girls' smiling faces and to receive all the hugs!

The picture shows the group eating supper at the Creekside Restaurant. We each had beans and rice with stewed chicken. After a long day of travel, eating by the creek was definitely appreciated.

The main work goal of the men for this trip is to create a floor for the church.
